Cyprus has the warmest weather of any holiday destination in the Mediterranean, in summer because of its proximity to the landmass of Eurasia and the Asian monsoon, and in winter because of its distance from the Atlantic Ocean. In particular it has more sunshine in the spring (March to May) than anywhere else in the Mediterranean, so it is definitely the first place to escape to as the European winter draws to an end.
The weather generally follows the pattern of all other Mediterranean destinations with a dry, practically rainless, warm to hot summer and a cooler winter when rainfall is more frequent but still low. In summer, which runs from the middle of May to the middle of September, high pressure prevails and there can be many days without a cloud in the sky. Temperatures at this time can rise well into the thirties Celsius on the coast and into the forties further inland such as at Nicosia where it is far hotter. As a general rule on the coast it is cooler in summer and warmer in winter than at places inland.
In winter, which runs from November to mid March, low pressure systems travelling from west to east across the Mediterranean bring periods of rain which can be heavy at times. Cyprus is fortunate in having a large mountainous region in the south-west that rises to almost 2,000 metres and which catches much of this rain during the winter months. Rainfall at elevations above 1,000 metres can be double that of places at sea level. There is even a ski-resort on Mount Olympus.
